Lehman College Dental Assistant Program

The Lehman College Dental Assistant Program is an 80-hour hybrid course with a 40-hour externship designed to prepare students for entry-level positions in dental practices. The program combines online classes with on-campus labs and evening schedules, offering flexibility for working adults. The curriculum emphasizes practical skills and knowledge for assisting in clinical and administrative dental tasks.

• Focused Curriculum. The program covers essential dental assisting knowledge, including dental anatomy, radiology, infection control, and chair-side procedures. Students also learn about the legal aspects of dentistry, dental operatory procedures, and administrative tasks such as patient record management.
• Hands-On Externship. A 40-hour externship with a local dental practice allows students to apply their learning in a real-world environment. This experience enhances their understanding of clinical and administrative duties, giving them a competitive edge in the job market.
• Certification Preparation. Graduates of this program are eligible to take national certification exams, including the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) Radiology Health and Safety (RHS) and Infection Control (ICE) exams. These certifications are highly valued by employers and can significantly improve job prospects.

To enroll in the program, students must:

• Hold a high school diploma or GED
• Have basic computer skills to participate in online learning
• Provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination and booster (required for externship)

The 80-hour course is delivered through a hybrid format, with online classes and in-person lab sessions. Classes are scheduled in the evenings (Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 PM to 9:30 PM), making it accessible for working professionals or those with daytime commitments. The externship, which is completed after the coursework, provides hands-on training at a local dental practice, ensuring students gain practical experience before entering the workforce.

The course tuition of $1,499 includes textbooks, registration fees, a certificate of completion, and the externship. While financial aid options are not offered for this program, the all-inclusive pricing provides a straightforward financial commitment.

Upon completing the program, students can take the DANB RHS and ICE exams, which are recognized certifications in the dental industry. While certification is not mandatory for employment, it can greatly enhance job opportunities and earning potential.
